Position overview
\nOnondaga Environmental Institute has openings for the position of Lead Watercraft Steward. The Lead Watercraft Steward supervises watercraft stewards, assists with training and enlists volunteer stewards. The majority of the time is spent conducting voluntary inspections of watercraft at public launches and educating watercraft users on how to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. Watercraft inspections entail removing & identifying plants & debris from boats & trailers & identifying aquatic invasive species. The position is 10-25 hours\/week, April through mid-October. The majority of hours will be weekends in the summer with some hours during the week.<\/p>\n
Duties and Responsibilities
\n\u2022 Schedule and supervise stewards and volunteers at launches
\n\u2022 Assist with volunteer enlistment, training and support
\n\u2022 Conduct voluntary watercraft inspections working in both beautiful and adverse weather conditions
\n\u2022 Educate boaters and the public about how to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species
\n\u0336 Converse with watercraft users \u0336 Disseminate written materials \u0336 Assist with tabling and workshops
\n\u2022 Attend required trainings and learn to identify common native and invasive aquatic species
\n\u2022 Complete data sheet for each inspection using tablets and electronic data-entry software
\n\u2022 Manage all watercraft steward equipment including signs, chairs and educator box
\n\u2022 Attend scheduled staff meetings and provide weekly written updates and photos to supervisor
\n\u2022 Represent OEI in a courteous and professional manner
\n\u2022 Follow and ensure that all supervisees follow all Covid-19 policies required by the program<\/p>\n
Qualifications
\n\u2022 Experience leading and\/or supervising others
\n\u2022 Excellent interpersonal communication skills and enjoyment of interacting with the public
\n\u2022 Able to successfully and clearly present information and ideas to a diverse audience, and to react in a positive, proactive manner in confrontational circumstances.
\n\u2022 College students or recent grads with experience in environmental education, natural resources, biology, environmental studies or a related field are encouraged to apply
\n\u2022 Ability to accurately collect data according to established protocols
\n\u2022 Enjoy working outdoors alone and as part of a team to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species
\n\u2022 Valid driver\u2019s license and reliable transportation<\/p>\n
Preferred
\n\u2022 Experience as a watercraft steward
\n\u2022 Experience with Microsoft programs, design software and social media tools<\/p>\n
Compensation $13.20\/hr<\/p>\n
